ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS

The graduation requirements for English Language Arts are:
  • 4 credits of English Language Arts 10
  • 4 credits of English Language Arts 11
  • 4 credits of English Language Arts 12
* All courses are worth 4 credits unless otherwise specified.
Grade 10
All students take Composition 10 (2 credits) and choose one other option (2 credits):
COMPOSITION 10 (MCMPS10)
Composition 10 is designed to support students in their development of written communication through a critical process of questioning, exploring, and sampling. Students will read and study compositions by other writers and consider a variety of styles as models for the development of their writing. The course builds students writing competencies by introducing them to varied structures, forms, and styles of compositions. Students have opportunities to individually and collaboratively study, create, and write original pieces, exploring audience and purpose. They also develop their craft through processes of drafting, reflecting, and revising.
 
LITERARY STUDIES 10 (MLTST10)
Literary Studies 10 is designed for students who are interested in the literature of a particular era, geographical area, or theme, or in the study of literature in general. The course allows students to delve more deeply into literature as they explore specific themes, periods, authors, or areas of the world through literary works in a variety of media.
 
​NEW MEDIA 10 (MNMD-11)
New Media 10 is a program of studies designed to reflect the changing role of technology today and the increasing importance of digital media in communicating and exchanging ideas. Coursework is aimed at providing students with a set of skills vital for success in an increasingly complex digital world by affording opportunities to demonstrate understanding and communicate ideas through a variety of digital and print media. New Media 10 explores tasks and texts designed to introduce students to the study of new media.
 
 LINEAR COMPOSITION AND NEW MEDIA 10                                                                    4 credits

Linear Composition and New Media 10 is designed to support student in their development of written communication through a critical process of questioning, exploring, and sampling. In this full year course, students will work to fill in learning gaps that will help them find success allowing them to develop their writing through processes of drafting, reflecting, and revising. Coursework is aimed at providing students with a set of skills vital for success in an increasingly complex digital world by affording opportunities to demonstrate understanding and communicate ideas through a variety of digital and print media. Students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their learning in alternatives that may focus on the use of assistive technology.
 
 Grade 11
ENGLISH FIRST PEOPLES LITERARY STUDIES AND NEW MEDIA 11 (MELNM11)
This course is for students who are interested in study First Peoples’ literature and examining the evolving role of technology today, especially the increasing importance of digital media in communicating and exchanging ideas and engaging in social advocacy. Students delve deeply into First Peoples’ oral and written literature in a range of media to explore various themes, authors, and topics. This provides a foundation for students to think critically and creatively as they continue to explore, extend, and strengthen their own writing and communication. Students examine the increasingly complex digital world and have opportunities to demonstrate understanding and communicate sophisticated ideas through a wide variety of digital and print media. Through the study of literature and critical engagement with new media, students: - extend their capacity to communicate effectively in a variety of contexts, - deepen their understanding of themselves and the world, - expand their understanding of what it means to be educated Canadian and global citizens.
 
ENGLISH FIRST PEOPLE’S LITERARY STUDIES AND WRITING 11 (MEFLS11)
This course is for students who are interested in studying First Peoples’ literature and using writing for self-expression and communication in a variety of contexts. Students delve deeply into First Peoples’ oral and written literature in a range of media to explore various themes, authors, and topics. This provides a foundation for them to think critically and creatively as they continue to explore, extend, and strengthen their own writing. Within a supportive community, students work individually and collaboratively to explore oral and written literature and create powerful, purposeful compositions. Through the study of literature and the processes of experimenting with, reflecting on, extending, and refining their writing, students: - extend their capacity to communicate effectively in a variety of contexts, - deepen their understanding of themselves and the world, - expand their understanding of what it means to be educated Canadian and global citizens.
 
Grade 12
ENGLISH STUDIES 12 (MENST12)
comprehensive Language Arts course designed for all students that includes essential disciplinary learning at the Graduation level. It represents the culmination of all that has been learned throughout English Language Arts K-11. The course builds on and extends students? previous learning experiences in ELA and EFP 10 and 11 courses and provides students with opportunities to: - refine their ability to communicate effectively in a variety of contexts and to achieve their personal and career goals, - think critically and creatively about the uses of language, - explore texts from a variety of sources, in multiple modes, and that reflect diverse worldviews, - deepen their understanding of themselves and others in a changing world, - gain insight into the diverse factors that shape identity, - appreciate the importance of self-representation through text, - contribute to Reconciliation by building greater understanding of the knowledge and perspectives of First Peoples, - expand their understanding of what it means to be educated Canadian and global citizens.
